You don’t need to have every answer to begin learning how to coach. You need a willingness to be curious about the person in front of you.
That sounds simple, but it takes practice. When someone shares a challenge, it’s tempting to offer advice right away. A coaching conversation creates room for them to explore what they think, what matters to them, and what they might do next.
Ask an open question. Try “What feels most important here?” instead of jumping to a solution. A thoughtful question can help someone see their situation more clearly.
Listen to understand. Pay attention to what they say and give them time to finish. You may hear something that a quick answer would have missed.
Let the answer breathe. A pause can feel uncomfortable, but it gives someone space to reflect. You don’t have to fill every silence.
These three habits are a place to start. Practice them in everyday conversations, and notice what changes when curiosity leads the way.
