Certification Is About More Than Letters After Your Name

A certificate can mark an important achievement. But when you sit with a client, the value of your training shows through the way you work.

Can you listen without taking over? Ask questions that deepen understanding? Maintain appropriate boundaries? Help someone turn reflection into a step they are willing to take?

These are practical skills. They need opportunities for practice, feedback, and continued development.

When exploring certification, look beyond the title. Ask what the curriculum covers, how skills are practiced, what feedback you receive, and how learning is assessed. Understand what the credential represents and what it qualifies you to claim.

Completing training does not mean your learning is finished. Each conversation can reveal something about your habits, assumptions, and ability to stay present.

The certificate matters most when it reflects preparation you can bring into your work. It becomes a reminder of what you have learned—and your responsibility to keep developing it.

If you are considering certification, imagine the client who will eventually sit across from you. Choose training with that person’s experience in mind.
